The clutch is a device that smoothly couples the gearbox to the engine without jerking. Most manual gearbox cars use a single-disc diaphragm clutch. Robotised gearboxes started with single clutch and now use dual-clutch systems.

The clutch is a wear part that should be changed at the first signs of weakness. Clutch life is approximately 150,000 km but varies greatly with driving style and journey type. Warning symptoms: difficulty changing gears, clutch slip under acceleration, jerking when moving off, rubbing noise.

The method involves: drain gearbox oil, remove driveshafts, remove starter, disconnect gearbox cables, remove gearbox, replace mechanism/disc/bearing, refit gearbox and components, refill gearbox oil, bleed hydraulic clutch circuit if applicable.
