Change Car Clutch
The clutch smoothly couples the transmission to the engine. It is a wear part whose deterioration is gradual, but whose replacement, once needed, is one of the heaviest jobs in car mechanics.
A heavy job
Replacing the clutch means removing the transmission. It is one of the most labour-intensive jobs in car servicing. The potential saving from doing it yourself is considerable, but the difficulty is high (4/5).
How does the clutch work?
The single-plate diaphragm clutch has three parts: the pressure plate (bolted to the flywheel), the friction plate (connected to the transmission) and the release bearing. The lining on the friction plate wears gradually with every pull-away and gear change.
When should you change the clutch kit?
Average life is around 93,000 miles, but town use wears the clutch out much faster. Replace it as soon as these symptoms appear: difficulty changing gear, slipping under acceleration, judder on pull-away, a rumbling noise at the pedal.

Full kit essential
Always replace all three parts together: pressure plate, friction plate and release bearing. Changing only one part of the kit is a false economy.

Signs of clutch wear
Slipping
The engine revs rise without the speed increasing in proportion, especially on hills or under heavy load. The friction plate is worn and no longer transmits all the power.
High biting point
The pedal has to be released almost fully before the clutch bites. The automatic adjustment has reached the limit of its compensation.
Noises and vibration
Crunching on gear changes, pedal vibration or a rumbling noise when you press the pedal: the release bearing is probably near the end of its life.
