Buyer’s guide: the Ford Taurus, Mercury Montego, Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Sable story
The Ford Five Hundred (2005 - 2007), Ford Taurus (2008 - 2014, Mercury Montego (2005 - 2007) and the Mercury Sable (2008 - 2009) were available with the following engines: 2.0L turbocharged in-line four-cylinder, 3.0L V6 or 3.5L V6. Plus a 3.5L twin turbo, not covered by the Haynes manual.
The engine drives the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transaxle via independent driveaxles. On All-Wheel Drive (AWD) models, the rear wheels are also propelled via a driveshaft, rear differential, and two rear driveaxles.
Suspension is independent at all four wheels. The front suspension uses strut/coil spring assemblies with lower control arms. The rear uses a multi-link design with shock absorbers and coil springs. The rack-and-pinion steering unit is mounted on the suspension cross member. Some later models are equipped with electronic power assist steering.
The brakes are disc at the front and rear, with power assist standard. An Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) is standard equipment.
